Petitgrain is a volatile oil distilled from the leaves and sometimes from the bitter orange tree¡¯s twigs. It has a less floral and citrus-like smell than Neroli or Orange. Petitgrain as a fragrance note has a distinct scent that is sweet but tart, with a subtle floral and woody characteristic. The scent melds very well with citrus, floral, and woody notes.

There are three essential oils derived from the bitter orange tree. Petitgrain oil is distilled from the leaves and twigs of the tree, Neroli essential oil is distilled from the blossoms, and Bitter Orange oil is produced by cold pressing the rinds of the fruits. Petitgrain has a deep, complex, green aroma with notes of citrus zest, citrus blossom, and slight woody undertones. Its soothing smell relieves one from sadness, fear, and depression as well.
Pregnant women should avoid ingesting and topically applying undiluted essential oils throughout pregnancy. Instead, try inhaling essential oils or adding them to a diffuser.
Make sure to store essential oils out of reach of children. You¡¯ll also want to keep your oils away from excessive light or heat, as this can alter the chemical properties of an essential oil significantly.
Always supervise essential oil application with your children. Because children have more delicate skin, it¡¯s a good idea to dilute oils before applying them topically.
